Have you ever wondered why your Pinterest personal style board looks nothing like your actual wardrobe?
Maybe you keep saving minimal capsule wardrobes … but your closet is full of patterns and color?
Or maybe you pin funky colorful outfits … when you actually love sleek, architectural pieces?
In this article, we’re going to talk about why this happens and discover what you should be pinning instead. In our upcoming small group workshop, we’ll dive deep into this process, but today I’m sharing one key insight you can use right away.
A Common Pinterest Personal Style Scenario
Picture this:
- Your Pinterest fashion board: All clean lines and neutral colors
- Your favorite art: Impressionist paintings full of movement
- Your home decor pins: Cozy spaces with lots of texture
- Your actual wardrobe: Somewhere in between… and you’re not sure why
Why This Disconnect Happens
We pin what we think we should wear
- The “perfect” capsule wardrobe
- The “professional” look
- The “put-together” aesthetic
- It might just be a look that is completely congruent with the woman wearing it, but has absolutely nothing to do with you.
What this approach misses is crucial: Your natural visual preferences. Your authentic style idiom. What truly draws you in.
The goal is not for you to look like Miss Pinterest 2024, but to look like you.
I think I’ve mentioned before that whenever I wear the outfits I feel most myself in, people always respond by interacting with me in the way I want them to. They see me as me.
And here’s the personal style secret that most people don’t get: how you look on the outside, who you are on the inside, and your visual preferences are not three separate things. These are three facets of you that will inherently be in harmony.
The Problem with Pinterest
Fashion pins show us complete “looks”
- They’re styled for maximum impact
- They’re often trend-focused
- They’re someone else’s vision
But your authentic style isn’t found in other people’s outfits. It’s found in what naturally catches your eye. In the images that make you pause. In the spaces that make you feel at home.
The Inside Out Personal Style Approach
Here’s what to do instead:
Look at your non-fashion Pinterest boards
- What colors appear in your travel pins?
- What textures show up in your home decor saves?
- What shapes do you see in your favorite art?
These preferences reveal your true aesthetic
- They’re more honest
- They’re more instinctive
- They’re more… you
This is exactly the process we’ll explore in my upcoming workshop – but let’s focus on what you can do today with your Pinterest boards…
This disconnect between what we pin and what we wear… It’s telling us something important:
Your authentic style isn’t found in fashion images alone. It’s discovered in your broader visual patterns. In what naturally draws you in. In what creates harmony with what already exists and what already exists is you.
This is why I help women look at art and nature before we ever discuss clothes.
If you’d like to discover your own visual patterns…you are invited to an online workshop to begin your signature style journey by discovering your aesthetic!
In this small-group (limit 10) workshop you’ll:
🔸Identify your inherent visual patterns
🔸Start building your inspiration
🔸Get real-time feedback in a supportive setting
🔸Learn how to translate what you love into what you wear
