Why Generation X is the sexiest generation
Welcome to Episode 21 of the Signature Style Systems podcast, where I’ll be sharing my take on why Generation X is considered the sexiest generation. We’ll also delve into the nuances of modesty and discuss whether it’s really a problem if you can see my bra strap. Get ready for an honest conversation about the reality that lies beneath our clothes. I’m about to offend you all!
First off, Recently someone told me that Gen X is considered the sexiest generation and pointed out that Sandra Bullock is still a leading lady at nearly 60! So why is Gen x still so youthful and sexy at ages 43-63? Well, here’s my thought: why not? Aren’t we all tired of other people defining our potential for us?
Generation X has historically been overlooked. Even now, discussions on generational dynamics tend to focus on Boomers and Millennials, without any mention of the generation in between.
Confession: I was a member of the modesty police
Let’s shift gears and talk about modesty and purity culture. Full disclosure: in the past, I was part of the modesty police, especially during my blogging days. However, my views on this topic have evolved, and in this episode, I’ll share a more nuanced perspective on planning for essential undergarments, including a fun strategy for your bras.
As my kids transitioned into adulthood, I started hearing stories about the damaging effects of strict adherence to modesty metrics, especially on young women developing their body image. One example was just over the top (no pun intended): my daughter was sent to change because her sports bra was visible. Nevermind that she was wearing a top over it and, as a sports bra, it looked like she had layered tank tops. Somebody knew it was a bra and sent her away from a group function during the meal to change. The overemphasis on bras not showing, in my opinion, is unrealistic. And I’d rather see a discreet panty line than assume someone isn’t wearing any undergarments!
So what if you can see my bra strap?
Here are my thoughts on choosing bras:
- Have you heard that a bra should never see a birthday? Idk, I heard that somewhere, and that is what originally got me started thinking about creating a calendar for shopping for various wardrobe components, which has morphed into my weekly wardrobe projects. If you would like to receive those, you can get on my email list by either taking the Style Personality Quiz or by downloading The Wardrobe Pyramid pdf planning guide.
- Also, have you ever noticed someone wearing a white blouse and a white bra at the same time? This is why for everyday bras, I stick to nude.
- However, in the summer, when it is very likely that I am wearing something sleeveless and my bra may show, I like to wear a color that coordinates with my outfit. It is so much fresher and more intentional looking than having a white or nude bra strap slip out. I have also used bikini tops for a bra on really hot days.
- Something else you can look for is a bra with convertible straps. I have one I can wear as strapless or change the strap configuration, and I also have a set of bejeweled straps. I can wear this with a strapless dress, for a fun option.
A couple potential strategies about underwear:
- Years ago, I was at a women’s event and the speaker recommended everyone always only wear black underwear, She had reasons I won’t go into
- I have favored always using nude, for the reason I gave about the nude bras., although to many people that might seem boring
- Under a dress in the summer I have started wearing like boxer brief styles in colors, like when we were little girls and always wore shorts under our dresses in case we decided to do a cartwheel.
Am I the only one who still feels like a little girl on the inside?
I’ll wrap up by encouraging you not to postpone investing in a good bra – it’s a necessity, not a luxury. And if you’ve heard that the majority of women wear the wrong size, consider getting a fitting as homework. Have fun playing dress-up and thank you for being part of Signature Style Systems!
