Here’s a little bit about me:

Knowing what to wear hasn’t come naturally, even though I was the little girl who spent her spare time drawing pages of outfits and poring over the Sears catalog creating complete wardrobes.

In the late ‘90s, I became super frustrated (as the hero likes to say, “frustrated with a cape”) when I couldn’t find a dress to wear to a wedding. Ultimately, since wearing jeans or going naked didn’t seem like an option, I chose something; then I felt so awkward in that dress that I put one of my suit jackets on over it.

I looked ridiculous!

After the wedding, I gave the dress to a friend and it was absolutely lovely on her! Why???

Lamenting to another friend about my wardrobe trauma, she recommended a library book with a revolutionary approach to style: The Triumph of Individual Style by Carla Mathis. Using well-known works of art, it walks the reader through style choices, teaching harmony with body design.

That was the beginning. Since that beginning, my desire to understand how women can discover and step confidently into their own best look has inspired me to research and discuss, innovate and systematize, and ultimately to study with Carla and become certified as a Personal Stylist.

Now I have a system based on knowledge, rather than preference, and I can work out from scratch what to wear. I know exactly why that dress was lovely on my friend and ridiculous on me. And I know why my instinct to throw on a fitted jacket was not wrong.

My blog, The Space Between My Peers, records my early journey.
